Y: As a Korean, I find it very insulting that some people talk about dog meat as if it was a real Korean traditional cuisine. Dog meat eaters often claim that dog meat is good for their health. There is no scientific or medical truth to back up this claim.
한국인으로써, 개고기가 진정한 한국의 전통음식이라고 말하는 것에 대하여 모욕을 느낍니다. 개고기를 먹는 사람들은 종종 개고기가 건강에 좋다고 주장합니다만 이 주장을 뒷받침할 만한 과학적, 의학적 근거가 없어요.
S: I always thought there was special nutrition in dog meat compared to other livestock.
전 항상 개고기가 다른 가축보다 더 영양이 많은 것이라고 생각했어요.
Y: Absolutely not. In fact, it has higher fat content than other livestock, and there is more risk to develop palsy. From a public health point of view, it is unfortunate that these lies are widespread among dog-eaters as there are far more Koreans these days who suffer from heart attack, high blood pressure and palsy than before due to over consumption of high calorie food.
전혀 아닙니다. 사실상, 다른 가축보다 지방 함유가 더 높고 중풍을 일으킬 위험도 높지요. 왜냐하면 요즘에는 고열량 식품을 과잉 섭취함으로써 심장병이나 고혈압, 중풍으로 고통 받는 한국인들이 늘어나는 요즘, 공공건강을 생각할 때 개고기를 먹는 사람들 사이에 이런 거짓말이 널리 알려진 것은 안타까운 일이지요
S: But I thought most Koreans accept it.
하지만 대부분의 한국인들이 개고기를 인정한다고 생각했어요.
Y: that’s where you’re wrong. Some Koreans have been eating dogs in some part of our country and in some times in our history, but it never has been eaten by the majority of Koreans. Respecting another country’s culture shows open mindedness but it needs to be done with thoughtful care and not in an irresponsible manner for the very sake of the country you want to understand and show respect. In Korea, there is a word, “Me-Pung-Yang-Sok’ which means “Beautiful custom and good morals” and refers to when on culture deserves respect. I have never heard any Koreans call dog meat “Me-Pung-yang-Sok”.
그 부분에서 잘못되었어요. 한때 한국의 역사, 몇몇 한국의 지역, 몇몇 한국인들이 개고기를 먹어왔지만 대다수의 한국인들이 먹은 적은 없습니다. 다른 나라의 문화를 존종하는 것은 편견없는 마음을 보여주는 것이겠지만 그 나라를 존중하고 진정으로 이해하고 싶다면 그 나라를 위한 사려 깊은 생각과 무책임하지않은 태도가 필요합니다.
한국에는 “미풍양속”, 아름다운 관습과 좋은 윤리라는 뜻의 말이 있고 이것은 존중받을 가치가 있는 문화를 언급할 때 씁니다. 전 어떤 한국인도 개고기를 미풍양속이라 부르는 것을 들어본 적이 없습니다.
