SAN GABRELL VALLEY TRIBUNE OPINION Thursday, January 22, 2009 YOUR VIEW We welcome your letters on public issues. Keep them brief, please. All letters are subject to editing. Persons of the year I can't buy what Time magaxine proclaims as "The Person Of The Year" no matter who that may be. There are many qualified candidates out there doing good, they just don't have the name. Throughout the past year I have been thinking of my favorite three: First, there is Steven Kwon of Pasadena, a retired nutritionist who founded Nutrition & Education International and has introduced soybean farming to Afghanistan. This man is daily saving the lives of women and children by teaching how to make protein-rich soy milk and a soy powder used in the baking of Naan, the staple bread of the country. Second, there is Jill Robinson, a Brit in China, who founded Animals Asia. She has obtained the freedom of hundreds of moon bears that are confined to small cages where their gall bladders are milked by a permanently installed catheter for the bile juice thought to be a cure-all. Third, there is Sunnan Kum in South Korea who founded Korean Animal Protection Society. She has devoted her life to rescuing and saving the lives of cats and dogs destined to be killed and eaten in restaurants because of the misguided belief that the animal's meat is a cure-all. My "Persons of The Year" are doing what they can while fighting bureaucratic red tape, false beliefs and lack of funds just to name a few of the obstacles they face daily. John G. LaBella SAN DIMAS |
